How to help Folding Home
The coronavirus situation significantly impacts people’s lives (and deaths) all over the world. Help us fight against this insidious disease by sharing your unused computer power for a good cause. Close unused browser tabs and rather share this power for something beneficial. The best would be to start helping right now, however, we’d like to ask you to have the [email protected] software installed and running at least during the live stream, so that you can help others while watching.
Through this software you help [email protected] to simulate the dynamics of COVID-19 proteins to hunt for new therapeutic opportunities. You can find more information at Folding Home website.
From now on until the start of the event you also have the opportunity to earn points in the application for sharing your computer power. At the end of the event we will announce all people/companies, who joined (ordered from the highest number of points earned) and they’ll appear on the homepage in the section Our Donors.
How to install Folding Home software?
Firstly, you need to download the software at the following link: https://foldingathome.org/alternative-downloads/ where you can find various versions for Windows, macOS as well as Linux.
When the installation file downloads, select Express install.
After that the application will be installed. Once you run the program it will be necessary to allow firewall for the application.
You can find the application among the hidden icons on the Taskbar.
Right click on the Folding Home icon and select Advanced Control. The following window should pop up:
Go to Configure in the upper left corner. Fill in your name so that we can identify how much points you earned by the end of the live stream (when we will assess the results). If you’re part of a company and would also like to promote it, you can put @ behind your name and denote the company name. For example: [email protected]
It’s very important to fill in the Team number which is specially assigned for the SEO4Life event. This is the number: 242739 – entering this number will help assess how much we all helped together at the end of the event.
Then click on Save.
The last step is to activate folding. You’ll see Paused in the Folding Slots section. By right-clicking select the option Fold and the system will get activated.
This way everything is activated and within 10-15 minutes the system will automatically assign you a task to calculate. You can find more information on the progress of processing the task in the Work Queue section.
Web client
The application also has a web client. You can open it by right-clicking on the icon (among hidden icons on the Taskbar) and selecting Web Control. As a result the system will open in your browser at https://client.foldingathome.org/
WARNING! In some Google Chrome versions page flickering might occur and not all data will be loaded. Folding Home is aware of this issue and is working on a workaround. A solution is to open the web client in another browser like Mozilla or Internet Explorer.
When the page loads successfully, the following window should pop up:
Important setting: In section I support research fighting, you need to select Any disease. This way your contribution will be assigned to the coronavirus research. That’s because other diseases are hard-coded and in case of Any disease it will be assigned to the coronavirus project.
